everybody needs a Maya

Just finished watching the last half of Sideways, its a good movie very slow paced something you can take in on a lazy afternoon like today. I have seen it earlier and every time I decide to write this post and put it off, well third time is the charm. I am a teetotaler so don't know much about wines and the culture but the movie does a very thorough job of conveying what some of my friends feel when they have wine. But I think most important is the character of Maya and what she represents. Its a friend who will stick up for you, even when the chips are down and encourages you to not give up however bad the circumstances, I think that and the simplicity with which she understand the main character of the movie Miles and relates to what he goes through and how he tries to convey it through his writing is really something special.
I believe and hope everyone in life has their own Maya be it a guy or girl, someone who trusts you and more importantly believes in you no matter what happens. Here's to the Maya's of the world.

Cinderella Feet Syndrome (CFS)

My ex-roommates girlfriend (fiance!) was here for the weekend, in almost two years that I have known him I had never met her. If you have ever known a person (especially a guy) in the absence of his better half you basically haven't known the guy at all. The behaviour of the guy, in this case my roommate is poles apart from his natural self. For starters he gave up the tickets to a very coveted concert because her majesty did not enjoy that kind of music, some would say that is love, my argument is why cant the girl for a change bite the bullet and just come to the concert but maybe I am biased. The guy just loves music I could not believe it!

So there we are the three of us doing some shopping, I accompanied them simply to avoid the monotony of working on a Sunday (although on hindsight I should have worked!). We reach a shoe store and my dear roommate goes down on one knee not to propose to her but help her try shoes, it reminded me of the fairy tale about Cinderella and how the prince goes about with the glass slipper trying to find his mystery princess. I think this is what I named as CFS the idea that the guy is ready to anything against his own likes/dislikes was for me symbolized by that act. It was a very trivial day to day act for them (maybe!) but that moment stayed with me.

Look out...just LOOK

A case of three windows and how life revolves around those three windows.

A window of the past that is almost a blur as I looked out of it, I saw color, I saw life and I saw character and most of all heard the clatter of humans, not just talk, but their gestures, their little gestures and their own little nuances which made you notice them and sometimes amuse you to the extent of bringing a smirk on your face and at times disgust, but you were never emotionless. Where was this on the first floor of a three storey building sitting on the parapet at evening time relaxing having a cup of hot chocolate and just idling time, in the middle of a busy street.

Another a window in the recent past, all you see is tall steel and concrete structures some higher than most buildings around here, some just modest enough that hey will make you cock your head but not sprain them in the process, but alas the people are missing, the color is reduced to dark hues of brick and mortar with the occasional splash thrown in, what did get added was the flow of a river, which you observed kept flowing oblivious to all the cars that passed along its banks or the ship that used the very water and some ingenious mechanical engineering to move. Where was this, sitting on the carpeted floor on the 23rd storey of a 30 storey building in the heart of downtown of a bustling city, in the early hours of morning on christmas eve sipping a cup of hot chocolate, (funny that the only things common are me and the cup of hot chocolate!)

Finally a window of the present all I can see is the balcony of another apartment, covered with snow all over although I must say that the fangs of icicles spewing out of the edge of the roof of my apartment complex has a very nice look about it. You almost want to reach out and feel the ice (I certainly do!) but alas you cant the mosquito net is in the way, an empty walkway devoid of people, which is occasionally populated by the guy who uses another mechanical device to get rid of the snow. Gone are the huge tall concrete structures and the colorful hues of brick and mortar all that remains is the snow and the grey sky with the lonely evergreen tree egging others to sprout some greens of their own, I can almost here the trees say, wait for spring to arrive and we shall give you company till then let us sleep. Where is this, the bedroom window behind the PC from where I put this up, you miss everything in it, but what you gain is solitude and the peace of mind I don't think its a big price to pay, but who am I kidding I still miss the clatter of people...like I said not just the talk but their small gestures and their nuances...
